A Very Special Letter

Approaching our 17th year of FOREVER 5th DIMENSION in late July, I can never take for granted the support of our “favorite stars”—Florence, LaMonte, Marilyn & Billy— and their respective colleagues, management, and family. Today, I share this lovely note received from the First Couple of Pop n’ Soul, as they have recently checked in with the festivities here:

June 17, 2024

Dear Robert,

Your FOREVER 5th DIMENSION pages are absolutely amazing!!  What a collection of our history and the wonderfully creative ways you lay things out!  You are a true artist, and we love to see your work.  You have captured our lives in a most beautiful way; we are so blessed to have you as our “supreme archivist.”

Father’s Day Reflection

We’re wishing dads, uncles, brothers, mentors, teachers, pastors and yes, superb singers…all the great men who have influenced us in such positive transformative ways…a Happy & Blessed Father’s Day! ❤ Taking this personal opportunity to acknowledge LaMonte McLemore and Billy Davis, Jr. who have greatly impacted me in how to conduct myself in “the entertainment biz”…and in life. These gentle yet dynamic men are dear familial friends, who have guided and mentored me to this day…it is a blessing to have them on the proverbial journey and with this being the 1st Father’s Day without my beloved dad, their presence is underscored, all the more.

Remembering the Cornerstone Who was “Mama June”

June 3: As reported tenderly by LaMonte McLemore‘s sweet sister Joan on her Facebook page, today would have been June McLemore’s 110th birthday. Affectionately known as “Mama June” to all who knew her, the adjectives: wise, witty, statuesque, inclusive, and incandescent can all be applied to this very special, ahead of her time lady. Mama June was the sole remaining parent of the members of The Original 5th Dimension for many years until her passing, remarkably at age 106. It’s no wonder Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. and Florence LaRue heralded her with special appearances at her 100th and subsequent birthday celebrations held in her native St. Louis. LaMonte’s lovely wife Mieko shares, “Not a day goes by that I don’t apply the wisdom of Mama June or her mother, LaMonte’s Grandma Gertrude.” LaMonte writes fondly about his mother in his hit memoir “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension,” stating, “That’s my Mama and I get choked up speaking about her…so I’m glad to know others speak of her with such affection.” Mama June…a true cornerstone that defines the ethos of the original members of The 5th Dimension. —Robert-Allan Arno

Happy 29th Anniversary, Mac & Mieko!

Happy New Month, Fans, Family & Friends. June 1 marks LaMonte & Mieko McLemore‘s’ 29th wedding anniversary! As LaMonte declares warmly in his memoir “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension,” with a re-write of his classic tune, dedicated to Mieko: “A Love Like Ours…was meant to be.” ❤❤Robert-Allan Arno

Mother’s Day Reflections

A belated if not thoughtful Happy Mother’s Day 2024 reflection: Mama June McLemore, Dr. Mary McCoo, Mrs. Sarah LaRueLaMonte‘s, Marilyn‘s and Florence‘s cherished mothers who made a major impact on their life’s ethic, not to mention Billy‘s mother, who was instrumental in taking her young son to cultural events like at the Muny Opera House in St. Louis, shaping his musical tastes early on. LaMonte says, “We all came from great mothers, who instilled values in us, they were the foundation of The 5th Dimension.” He added chuckling, “That’s why none of us were ever late for the plane or anything else!” There are more heartwarming stories to tell about these women, but today, we honor the memory of these strong and graceful special ladies.

On a personal note, I thank Florence, Marilyn & Billy, and LaMonte & Mieko for their continued prayers and caring communications with concern to my 88-year-old mother’s health and comfort. We are indeed, “5th Family.” —Robert-Allan Arno, Forever 5th Dimension

Greatest Hits Mystery Solved!

Greatest Hits album?! A Mystery Solved! (Photo: The Forever 5th Dimension Collection)

Years ago, on the Sally Jesse Raphael talk show (before it became a forum of sensationalism) the guest was none other than Marilyn McCoo fresh off her (first) multi-year run hosting “Solid Gold.” It was a warm and inspirational interview, with Sally’s admiration for Marilyn on full heartwarming, respectful view. Moreover, Billy totally surprised his wife by joining the panel. With happy tears, Marilyn cutely shared, “I was mad at him because he didn’t answer the phone when I called earlier…now I know why!”

What was curious about this appearance was the montage of albums, press photos, and assorted memorabilia that was shown before the commercial break which included none other than an album cover titled “Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.’s Greatest Hits.” “How did I miss this compilation!” I thought? Management, when asked, had never heard of it, either. The mystery prevailed all these years and somehow popped into my mind recently. Upon internet search, I finally found the answer! It’s a foreign release from the Philippines, an area that is a big supporter of Marilyn & Billy’s and The 5th Dimension’s music, in fact, tunes not necessarily hits in America like “Saving All My Love for You,” and “Somebody Warm Like Me” charted there, as Marilyn & Billy shared with FOREVER 5th DIMENSION a few years ago, right after the duo appeared in concert at Manila’s famed Araneta Center arena.

Issued in 1980, here is the side A & B set list of “Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.’s Greatest Hits”…see if you agree with the choices. Personally, I’m happy to see “Never Gonna Let You Go” (should have been a single!), and “Easy Way Out” which WBLS in New York City, the nation’s top R & B station played as their choice pick at the time of Marilyn & Billy’s first duet album release, “I Hope We Get to Love in Time” which soon after garnered the mega hit and Grammy winner, “You Don’t Have to be a Star.” Interestingly, the follow-up, top 10 charting single to “Star,” “Your Love” is not included on the album set. However, Billy’s solo, “Stay with Me” is a great counter to Marilyn’s precursor version of Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love.” Culled from McCoo & Davis’s 3 duet albums of the ‘70’s, the hits package comprises singles including “My Reason to Be” and “Shine on Silver Moon,” cross-cultural fan favorites, and more than a few surprises. And yes, for collectors, it’s nearly impossible to find!

Ode to a Gentleman

4/25: Ode to a renowned gentleman and a visionary, Sir Jason Winters on the occasion of his birthday. I first “met” Jason not knowing it was him ‘til many years later, as he mightily announced from behind the scenes as manager extraordinaire, “Please welcome for the first time in 16 years, The Original 5th Dimension!” to thunderous applause on that remarkable ’90’s (reunion) tour. Today, we give that applause back to you, Jason for your elegant care of your stars, the global fans, and your keen eye for keeping it all fresh for them and us. You’ve touched and brightened many lives through those luminaries you’ve guided to entertain the world, not to mention the way you support my longtime efforts via Forever 5rh Dimension. And thus, today you are our shining star to whom we send much appreciation, many blessings, and warmest regards. Happy Birthday, Sir Jason!
