Happy One-Year Anniversary to #MarilynBilly’s Soaring “Blackbird”

#HappyAnniversary
FOREVER 5th DIMENSION honors the 1-year anniversary of the soaring “Blackbird: Lennon/McCartney Icons.” This historic CD by Marilyn MCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. #MarilynBilly has been critically, celebrity & fan acclaimed. I’m so proud to share my review of the project featured at Amazon:

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., 2 of the most recognizable voices of The Rock n’ Soul era, are icons & trailblazers who prevail with their astuteness, seasoned vocal chops, and eternal hope. With their latest big label endeavor, produced by the visionary Nic Mendoza, the song selection focuses on the music of Lennon & McCartney, where McCoo & Davis’s interpretations make this glowing affair “milestone & magnificent” with a call to Civil & Human Rights.

The project works nicely via its flow. Opening with a current-styled smooth Jazz jaunt, “Gotta Get You Into My Life” welcomes us to the festivities. With “The Fool on the Hill,” Marilyn & Billy continue to welcome, including fresh vocal talent Natalie Mendoza…it’s as if the 3 are joining hands, dancing in a circle of multi-generational musical joy. The title tune, soloed by Marilyn is ingenious, Ms. McCoo translates “Blackbird” into a cousin of Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit.” She takes a gut-wrenching, contemporary Broadway showstopper style and combines it with her recording finesse…it boils down to a fine simmer, in the pantheon of one of Marilyn McCoo’s greatest vocal solos. Billy solos with “Ticket to Ride” deftly bringing us his St. Louis Blues origins, then he conjures “Help” into a Gospel anthem…yes, one of America’s greatest Soul singers, Billy Davis, Jr., takes it to church.

“(Just Like) Starting Over” is so delightful a duet, it can be a full-circle rejoinder to the classic, “Up-Up and Away.” No stranger to vocal groups, Ms. McCoo & Mr. Davis’s roots as former lead singers of The 5th Dimension entangle with another mega group, The Beatles in innovative ways. Concluding with “And I Love Her” as one of the most passionate duets of their 50 year career span, we are left wanting more. So savor Marilyn’s torchy “The Long & Winding Road,” her smokey “Yesterday,” and Billy’s danceable “Silly Love Songs,” too! Then listen to the complete experience, again and again. ~~Robert-Allan Arno

“Blackbird: Lennon/McCartney Icons” is available at Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music and all major outlets.

My special thanks to Jason Winters & Steve Rosenblum of Sterling/Winters (Kathy Ireland International) Management and to Marilyn & Billy for the lovely personal shout-out in the “Blackbird” liners. ~~Robert

The Original 5th Dimension: Rare Photo Art and Exclusive Quote!

The Original 5th Dimension by Michael Collopy

#ThrowbackThursday Today we have quite a rare treat to share as we conclude our April salute to the Oscar & Grammy wins of “Summer of Soul” featuring The 5th Dimension, with memorable black & white photos of The 5th. Presenting photo-art by the renowned celebrity photographer, Michael Collopy taken in the early 90’s, during The Original 5th Dimension’s reunion tour of the time. Michael shares exclusively for LaMonte McLemore’s social media and with Robert-Allan Arno for FOREVER 5th DIMENSION the following about the shoot:

“This group photo was taken in my studio right before a performance and I remember each of them being so accommodating, warm and personable. I was especially thrilled to photograph the original members of The 5th Dimension together because they truly provided the soundtrack of our lives. They were such a reflection of our turbulent time…how their beautiful music transported and still transports (me) to an indescribable place of happiness and deep joy.”

Thank you, Michael! Mr. Collopy’s humanitarian effort called Architects of Peace, advocates and educates for peace in the schools. Visit his multi-faceted website at: @MichaelCollopy | Linktree

Happy 80th, Barbra Streisand, featuring Tunes by Marilyn & Florence!

Forever 5th Dimension is honoring the 80th birthday of the legendary songstress, actor, and director, Barbra Streisand with two interpretations by our very own iconic women, Florence LaRue and Marilyn McCoo.

Enjoy Florence’s poignant solo of “Stoney End” from “The 5th Dimension: LIVE” album, which boldly kicks off the Laura Nyro medley:

Here’s Marilyn’s memorablely graceful version of “The Way We Were” from SOLID GOLD. Marilyn & Billy (Davis, Jr.) shared with Forever 5th Dimension quite emotionally, that they also got to perform the tune at a tribute to songwriters Alan & Marilyn Bergman including never-before-heard lyrics which according to them, were “breathtaking.” ~~Robert-Allan Arno

PORTRAIT: Anniversary Reflections

“It was our form of a protest record,” declares Marilyn McCoo about the seminal album, “The 5th Dimension/Portrait,” alluding specifically to side 2 featuring “Save the Country” by Laura Nyro and then the Independence Medley: “The Declaration/A Change is Gonna Come/People Gotta be Free.” Concerning his timeless watershed moment delivering Sam Cook‘s “People Gotta Be Free,” Billy Davis, Jr. shared with Forever 5th Dimension, “That’s not me, it’s God working through me!” In his memoir, LaMonte McLemore notes he was particularly intrigued with artist Leroy Neiman attending the sessions, sketching The 5th Dimension in the recording studio…his etchings found in the album’s fold-out. Of course, Neiman’s “portrait” is famously featured on the cover. About Florence LaRue‘s tour-de-force, “This is Your Life” by Jimmy Webb, the tunesmith shared, “That was a good song for Florence.” Other notable cuts included Neil Sedaka‘s “Puppet Man,” a personal favorite of producer Bones Howe. Also, the jazzy scat of “Dimension 5ive,” Mac’s penning of “A Love Like Ours,” and Billy rocking out on “Feelin’ Alright?” The ubiquitous for-the-time, stellar musicians known as The Wrecking Crew have the following to share on Portrait’s anniversary week, noting that “One Less Bell to Answer” by Bacharach/David saved the day for the album, bringing a huge classic hit for The 5th Dimension with the torchy Ms. McCoo in the lead:

This week in April of 1970, the LP “Portrait” by The 5th Dimension was released on Bell Records. It was produced by Bones Howe.

The album stayed in the mid-60s on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts after the release of its first three singles, none of which entered the Top 20 of the American pop music charts. Bell Records, hoping to see a return on the investment they made by signing The 5th Dimension after the group’s contract at Soul City Records ended, made a fourth and final attempt at a hit – a relatively uncommon practice at the time – with the release of Burt Bacharach and Hal David‘s “One Less Bell to Answer”. The single rose all the way to #2 by Christmas 1970, becoming one of the group’s greatest hits of all time.

The album was recorded at Wally Heider Recording in Hollywood August 22, 1969-March 20, 1970.

Instrumental personnel on the album:

Michael Anthony – electric guitar

Mike Deasy – electric guitar

Dennis Budimir – rhythm guitar

Tommy Tedesco – rhythm guitar

Fred Tackett – finger pickin’ guitar

Joe Osborn – Bass Player – bass

Hal Blaine – drums, percussion

Larry Bunker – congas, mallets, percussion, drums

Gary Coleman – mallets, percussion

Larry Knechtel – piano, organ, tack piano

Jimmy Rowles – piano

Tony Terran – trumpet

Gary Illingworth – electric piano

Bob Alcivar was the vocal arranger

Special thanks to Marilyn, Billy, Florence, LaMonte, Bones, and The Wrecking Crew! ~~Robert-Allan Arno

Record Store Day, 2022!

It’s #recordstoreday2022! They’re not as prevalent as they once were, so it’s important to support local record stores when we can. And hey, we’re all getting new turntables or breaking out the old ones, lately! Here are some classics by The 5th Dimension for your “shopping tip” pleasure… ~~Robert-Allan Arno

Earth Day, Earthbound!

#HappyEarthDay2022! Today we honor “Earthbound,” the final album as recorded by The Original 5th Dimension, produced by Jimmy Webb. LaMonte McLemore writes about its “secrets” in his memoir, “From Hobo Flats to the 5th Dimension” (available at Amazon), and #MarilynBilly (McCoo/Davis) talked to Forever 5th Dimension about this work in a number of our very special interviews through the years. In celebration of our upcoming milestone anniversary, we’ll be bringing you an array of these archival quotes over the next few months, here at the Forever 5th Dimension blog, as we lead to our official 15th in late July! ~~Robert-Allan Arno

Grammy Reflections with The 5th Dimension

#GRAMMYSunday Tonight, the 64th annual Grammy Awards will air. The 5th Dimension family is always appreciative of their 6 Grammys for “Up-Up and Away,” and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In.” Here’s a sentimental throwback to the entire 15th Grammy broadcast of 1973. The Original 5th Dimension, introduced by host Andy Williams, presents the 1st award of the evening, starting at 11:06. You’ll see Billy Davis, Jr. groovin’ with “Mack the Knife,” Marilyn McCoo brings a charming “Yesterday,” Ron Townson has fun with “It’s Not Unusual,” Florence LaRue emotes a sensitive “We’ve Only Just Begun,” and LaMonte McLemore introduces & then the group punctuates the medley with Carly Simon’s “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard it Should Be.” Enjoy this special moment in time!
