Florence LaRue: Celebrating a Delightful Diva’s Birthday

NEWEST FLORDateline Feb 4, 2025: It’s a Florence LaRue Celebration as we honor the “Delightful Diva’s” 82nd birthday at Forever 5th Dimension! I know I’ve said it before & it bears repeating: Florence is a breathtaking force of nature, a whirlwind of all things energetic, compassionate, witty, downright sassy, sensitive & strong. Florence continues to mesmerize as today’s sole original member of The 5th Dimension, leading the current quintet with an already busy global touring schedule for 2025 of greatest hits & lots of tasty “fun for the entire family” surprises. A recent charmingly energetic appearance on the “Sherri” talk show where Florence promoted her inspirational self-help book, “Grace in Your Second Act,” brought the icon even more fans. Moreover, The Original 5th Dimension starred in the recent Oscar winning blockbuster documentary, “Summer of Soul,” produced by Questlove. Florence enthusiastically commented, “We were so busy performing, that it was a pleasure to see the documentary and enjoy all the (other) legends appearing at the Harlem Cultural Festival in ’69! New generations get to know us now! And like Stevie and Gladys, we are blessed to still be performing today.” Recently, Florence also appeared as part of a panel discussion at UCLA, after a screening of The 5th Dimension’s first network TV special, which originally aired in 1970. Florence quipped to the audience amid many pearls of gratitude and wisdom, “I wasn’t fat then, I was pregnant with my son during the taping!”  It’s hard to believe that the age-proof, eternal glamour girl who makes “80 the new 40” has been part of The 5th for over 50 years!

She initially got into “the biz” with aspirations of a career in acting. It was at The Miss Bronze California pageant that Florence ran onstage with suitcase in hand emoting “April in Paris” aka “Avril en Paris” in perfect French. Upon seeing the poignant performance, judge & legend, Eartha Kitt purred, “We have our girl!” Florence, who won the Grand Talent Prize was photographed by none other than LaMonte McLemore, who also captured the year’s previous winner, Marilyn McCoo. And so, history began, with Florence being invited by “Mac” to sing with “The Versatiles” along with himself, McCoo, Billy Davis, Jr. & Ron Townson. Their transition into The 5th Dimension started an uplifting ride that is heralded in uniting diverse audiences through their message of “harmony and understanding.” Florence smiles when she calls it “a Cinderella story.” 6 Grammy awards plus countless Gold & Platinum records for classic songs like “Up-Up & Away,” “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” and “One Less Bell to Answer” are an indelible part of Florence and The 5th Dimension’s place in music history.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A few seasons ago, Florence & I attended the Broadway show “After Midnight” starring Vanessa Williams, and upon our going backstage I noticed many young singers and dancers in the Cotton Club-inspired review, flocking to Ms. LaRue to pay homage and extend their gratitude for the example she’s so masterfully set.  When I asked Florence about such an appreciative reaction that night as well as continuously from fans the world over, she gently stated, “I’m always amazed, it’s humbling…The 5th Dimension and I were just the messengers.” A woman of God who appears in testimony to the power of grace on such shows as TBN’s PRAISE, Florence’s thoughtful response makes sense. Mega Producer Bones Howe muses, “Florence was always so…dancing, moving…full of life!” Founding member, McLemore who remained alongside LaRue for 41 years of 5th adventures reminds us in his popular memoir, FROM HOBO FLATS TO THE 5th DIMENSION, “Many might not know that Florence has an ingenious ear in knowing not only her part, but everyone’s,” an attribute that comes in handy in her keeping today’s sound of The 5th Dimension–along with members Patrice Morris, Shane Lawrence, Floyd Smith and Sidney Jacobs–authentic as well as fresh.

Florence told REWOUND RADIO she was never fully satisfied with her signature solo recordings that have become legacy songs. Jimmy Webb‘s “This is Your Life ” and Laura Nyro‘s “He’s a Runner” are just some “Florence tunes” she surprisingly thinks were quote, probably arranged in too high a key. FLORENCE BIRTHDAY“As an alto, I prefer my later recording of ‘I Knew You When’ that the producer encouraged me to sing full-out,” she informed.  Of course, fans think each unique “Florence solo” is a hallmark of excellence including the Gospel-tinged “All Kinds of People” penned by Bacharach/David, the bittersweet “Salty Tears,” the effervescent fan-favorite “Magic in My Life,” the sensual “Love Hangover” (another personal LaRue fave), not to mention her sumptuous version of “Stormy Weather” in concert today during The 5th Dimension’s Rain Medley.

Whether touring with “The 5th,” in her solo autobiographical show, “Just as I Am” or her “Jazz a LaRue” last presented at New York City’s tony Metropolitan Room, giving inspiring speeches or volunteering for the homeless, our “Delightful Diva” (a moniker she gets a kick out of!) has no intention of slowing down, just re-invigorating herself by “stopping to smell the roses more” as she told her Facebook fans and friends.  Thus, Florence LaRue continues to please her millions of fans with more magic, more picnics, more balloons, more sunshine. She beams onstage, “You’ve given The 5th Dimension Family so much love…and that’s why we give you back all the hits from our hearts to yours.”  Let’s send Florence more love and blessed wishes on the occasion of her birthday.  Robert-Allan Arno

(with “love notes” from the fans):

Florence’s iconic ballad “This Is Your Life” written by Jimmy Webb from PORTRAIT, and the poignant “He’s a Runner” written by Laura Nyro from the LOVE’S LINES album stylistically and thematically go hand-in-hand.

“This Is Your Life” from “Portrait”—listen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGXhzYP9aR4

“He’s a Runner” from “Love’s Lines, Angles & Rhymes”—listen at: https://youtu.be/kb8XzRFBZ3M

The fans say about “This is Your Life” …

Brian Medoro Gorgeous song where Florence gets to show off her vocal power early on. We all know now how she can burn down the house.

Douglas C. Charles One of my favorites.

Blake Morant …great orchestration, a beautiful vocal arrangement and meaningful lyrics. Florence’s smoky version of “This Is Your Life” occupies a hallowed place on my playlists.

Dale Kocik Still a 5th and Florence favorite of mine. Her spot on vocal, the instrumentation and the back up vocals are perfect.

Renee T Armstead LOVE this. It brings back wonderful memories of watching her sing this in concert in the 70’s when “Portrait” came out!

Joe Peltonovich It seems like every song you post is one of my favorites! This is no exception. Florence does such a nice job on this one. She is just so cool!

Daniel Clark Awesome song. There should be an album of Florence singing these solos.

The fans say about “He’s a Runner”…

Alain Baptiste My wife and I feel both “This Is Your Life” and “He’s A Runner” define grace and we think Ms.Florence LaRue is an architect of this state, she is a classic dancer with her notes and emotions. Mariette and Alain Baptiste

Blake Morant “He’s a Runner” has wonderful appeal, which I appreciated much later when I matured musically.

Susie Paige Birthday Blessings, Florence❣ My two favorites together are “This is Life” & “He’s a Runner”!

Michael John Kitner Love both “Life” and “Runner”–was thrilled to tell her
At the Miller outdoor theater in Houston Texas!

For a “magical hangover,” we couple the addictive “Magic in my Life” which no one ever seems to get enough of, from “Earthbound,” with the get-down groove of “Love Hangover.” For this, Florence recorded the lead in a dimly lit studio for “atmosphere”…but the rest of “the sweetest hangover story”—plug alert!—is told in LaMonte McLemore’s hit memoir “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension” now in its 2nd edition, at Amazon.

The fans say about “Magic in My Life”…

Robert Darnell Hollinsed I’m getting goose bumps thinking about these songs…”Magic in My Life”…I better pull out some albums, hahaha!!

The fans say about “Love Hangover”…

Brian Medoro I had the good fortune to see the group perform “Love Hangover” live twice in concert. First in Rochester in ’76 and then at Valley Forge in PA. That mysterious opening just grabs you…then they transition to layers of: “Over…Over….Oveeerrr!!” Then the band just hit it hard! It turned into the hardest beat dance song that would level any artist today attempting to cross over into that genre. The audience was yelling, whistling and cheering until the song’s end. It was very exciting to see and hear The 5th Dimension’s new flashy song. I have never forgotten it.

Tony Sbriglia Florence did a fantastic vocal on ” Love Hangover”!

Blake Morant Ah, I so appreciate you highlighting “Love Hangover” during this celebration of the indefatigable Florence LaRue!

“All Kinds of People” & “Salty Tears”: We sum up our featured tunes for our “Florence celebration” with 2 poignant songs of compassion…and passion. “All Kinds of People” written by Bacharach/David is not only Gospel-tinged but just as deeply relevant today. About this striking performance, Florence recently commented on the “Anything Goes” radio show and humbly so: “I forgot how beautiful the background singing was on this one!” Next is “Salty Tears”…and this is the un-vaulted alternative take & extended version that Bones Howe was so kind in providing (a few years ago) for this special FOREVER 5th video.

“All Kinds of People” from “Individually & Collectively”—listen at: https://youtu.be/uwCjsGo32fM

The fans say about “All Kinds of People”…

Michael John Kitner I love this one !!!

Blake Morant Well, now we have a tune that displays Florence’s incredible range.  No doubt, the lyrics remain so salient today.  A Bacharach treasure.

Honoring Black History Month

Image

“The 5th Dimension’s essence of harmony brought people together in unity.”  It’s a phrase I’ve come up with over the years as biographer of The original 5th Dimension and of LaMonte McLemore.  Billy Davis, Jr. smiled when I told him this and added, “Marilyn and I always wanted to be approachable to our fans, our message too is that we are all really family.”  Florence LaRue reacted humbly, “We appreciate those sentiments, we were purely God’s messengers.”  Ron Townson in ’91 said with joy, “I am proud of our contributions, they go to other galaxies, too…’Earthbound’ was put in a time capsule that was placed on the moon!”  LaMonte in his upcoming for ’14 memoir FROM HOBO FLATS TO THE 5th DIMENSION (available in June!) talks at length about The 5th Dimension’s impact in the most heartfelt of ways.  From reaching out to the college crowd, to going behind “The Iron Curtain,” Mac didn’t take these performance opportunities for granted, “I never wanted to be a statistic…but to be an example to all…to make my mother and grandma proud.”

Image

Here is The original 5th Dimension as produced, a few years back by FOREVER 5th  in honor of Black History Month.  Their interpretation of “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” aligns their brilliant harmonies and contemporary  finesse with the history of a profound spiritual.  Marilyn McCoo said it best, “We did this for Burt Bacharach’s TV special in ’73, including showing rehearsals of the piece, as we wanted our fans to have a peak at the effort we put into our work…to inspire them.”

Celebrating Ron “Sweets” Townson in 2025: Remembrances from the Stars, Fans and Family Featuring his Greatest Solos

SWEET MEMORIES OF “SWEETS”

Updated for 2025
by Robert-Allan Arno

Image

As we honor his official birthday (it’s January 29 and not the 20th as so many sites state in inadvertent error) at “Forever 5th Dimension,” we reflect on the aura of the beloved Ronald “Sweets” Townson–the robust dignity of his classically infused blend, “the visual image” of The Original 5th Dimension as Florence (LaRue) so warmly called him.  She commented about her fellow Aquarian just last year, at UCLA’s panel discussion following the viewing of The 5th Dimension’s first network TV special. Noting Ron’s abundant talents and sharing their mutual good-natured teasing, she added emotionally, “You never realize how much you care about someone until they’re gone.” LaMonte (McLemore) who grew up with Ron in St. Louis, recalls with a smile, “The Sweet Man’s” other nickname: “Danny Boy.” According to Mac in his popular memoir, FROM HOBO FLATS TO THE 5th DIMENSION, “It never failed, Ron would always croon that emotional standard at any special event, and he’d blow the crowd away each and every time!”

TAKE BACK RONHis early mentoring by the renowned likes of Nat King Cole and Dorothy Dandridge provided Ron with confidence and panache plus a penchant for “giving back,” developing talent later on including managing the mid-late ’70’s singing group Creative Source and his own back-up trio of the time, Wild Honey, when he embarked on a solo career for a few years. W H member Freddie Pool, now with The Three Degrees, expresses, “Ron had an eye for the best…he always wanted perfection in our shows. His precious soul endures.” When Ron came back to The 5th Dimension, he re-joined Florence and LaMonte and got to work with new talents including Joyce Wright Pierce who states with emotion, “‘Sweets’ was the most kind, the most generous, not only a music man but a gentleman.” His granddaughter GG Townson, the popular star-rising actress who starred in the Salt-N-Pepa biopic most fondly remembers private moments like watching TV with her grandad. But she certainly proclaims that The 5th Dimension “broke barriers.” GG would love to be involved in a potential movie on the legendary quintet! And as biographer of The Original 5th Dimension, experiencing Ron’s touching pride in a watershed interview we conducted during the time of the original group’s reunion tour, I can only imagine his wondrous reaction to The 5th Dimension being part of the Oscar-award winning docu-movie (and released soundtrack to) “Summer of Soul.” Produced by Questlove, it features the group’s energetic performances of “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” and “Dont’cha Hear Me Calling to Ya” at the Harlem Cultural Festival in ’69.

ImageRon Townson:  his indelible recorded as well as spine-tingling in-concert legacy, from his heart to ours: “MacArthur Park,” “Sailboat Song,” “What Do I Need to Be Me,” “Love Story,” “One Hell of a Woman,” “Not Again,” “Band of Gold”…and who can’t still be charmed by his playfully mischievous turn on “Eli’s Coming” from the classic LIVE album?  Ron’s son, Kyle Townson notes another fan favorite, the virtuosity of his father’s tour-de-force aria as Canio in “Pagliacci,” featured on the Vegas stage and as part of The 5th Dimension’s second TV special, “Traveling Sunshine Show.” Kyle reveals, “At first I think the audience thought my dad being in front of a mirror, in clown make-up was going to be a comedic performance.  I could hear them laughing a bit…but then when Dad started singing, there was a hush.  They certainly got it…and I’d hear them sobbing along with those tears of the clown from ‘Pagliacci!'”

JET RON ENLARGED

Ron, wife Bobette and sons Kim & Kyle grace the cover of JET

Marilyn & Billy (McCoo & Davis, Jr.) recall Ron’s gentle smile as well as his ability to be the quintet’s historian when it came to specifics, especially handy during the many media interviews The 5th encountered. The duo underscores, “Ron embodied the authentic sound of The 5th Dimension which lives on in the group’s classic recordings.” Producer Bones Howe adds, “Ron had this unique tenor that could go all over the place. He blended seamlessly with the guys but could sing falsetto with Marilyn and Florence.” The fans get misty at the thought of this endearing, respected role model who soared like an eagle with The 5th Dimension. Think of his high notes on “Aquarius,” and “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing;” on the latter, listen for his rejoinder phrase, “Next to me!”  Then there’s his “flowing” intro to the obscure fan-favorite, which was one of Ron’s faves, too, “On the Beach (In the Summertime).” Marilyn & Billy add, “That’s Ron’s laugh on the tune, ‘The Rainmaker!'”

ron resized 5

Reflecting on the quality interview time Susan Aglio and I had with Ron the day after the debut of The Original 5th Dimension reunion tour, circa ’91, The Sweet Man was brought to tears when discussing his “MacArthur Park” moment as he shared, “My father always wanted me to record the song’s complete version; I’m so glad I got to perform the extended song onstage last night.” Ron was a humble man–this standing ovation garnering, literal stop-the-show solo turn with his groupmates in syncopated back-up is so unforgettable that it is emulated in The 5th Dimension’s shows, to this day.  Ron also shared thoughtfully, “I’m proud that the ‘Earthbound’ album (one of his favorites) was sent up to space in a time capsule.  And that school kids have learned to recite The Declaration of Independence because of our song, ‘The Declaration.'”  Ronald SweetsLaMonte, in his memoir, concurs: “It was abundantly clear that Ron, along with being an exemplary family man, took the utmost pride in his contribution to The 5th Dimension, and to music history as a whole.  Fans would flock to Ron because they’d recognize his authoritative yet adorable one-of-a-kind look more than the rest of us put together.”

We lost Ronald in 2001, but our Sweet Man’s light sings in the corners of our mind as he graces the angels’ celestial choir, eternally.

RON !Kyle Townson, Ron’s son, kindly shares his thoughts:

My dear brother Robert, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. Every year you out-do yourself with the tributes for ‘Ron’/The 5th Dimension on his birthday, such a wonderful thing you do with keeping his spirit alive.”

Jason Winters of Sterling-Winters/kiWW Management shares these powerful reflections:

“Ron Townson was an amazing talent and awesome gentleman. He was a hero and mentor to me and my partner, Erik Sterling. Ronald’s  (1980’s) return to the group placed the majority of The Original 5th Dimension back onstage and having his visual image, history and soaring talent enhanced the line up in magnificent ways. We will always be grateful for his suggestion to LaMonte and Florence that Sterling Winters Company take the giant leap from public relations to management. We loved The Sweetman. Respected him greatly. We will always miss him. God bless Ronald’s memory, Mrs. Bobette Townson and each member of the Townson family. Robert-Allan, we are beyond grateful to you for celebrating the legacy of each history maker in the ensemble. Finally, for those who may not know, Ron and Mrs. Townson presented ‘The 5th Dimension’ name to the quintet. Indeed, it served the artists and their fans beautifully.”

Special thanks to Kyle, GG, Marilyn & Billy, Florence, LaMonte, Jason, Joyce, Freddie and Bones for their contributions to this piece.

the-great-mr-ronald-sweets-townson-circa-74HIS TOP 5:  The Best of Ronald “Sweets” Townson

–“Band of Gold”  From The 5th Dimension’s INDIVIDUALLY & COLLECTIVELY album…Ron’s falsetto brings a 50’s retro effect (shadowing some of his earlier Doo-Wop singles with The Intervals) to the romantic “Band of Gold.”

The fans say:

Susie Paige My favorite Ron solo!

Alain Baptiste Soothing and agreed Robert-Allan, found it nodding to the fifties feel that came up at the time in some of seventies pop and R & B. Mariette and I will always love the sound of Ron.

Blake Morant His “Band of Gold” remains one of my favorite and harkens back to an era when falsetto was more de rigueur in pop music. At the risk of sounding old fashion, I hope this brand reemerges. One can only hope.

Brian Medoro Very timely when groups like The Stylistics all had falsetto singers during that 70’s era. Loved the 50’s throw back and of course the backgrounds added a warmth to the overall song.

Hear “Band of Gold” at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmcfrJ1DU20

“The Sailboat Song” remains an enigma to this day, (if you peek in on YouTube) many still don’t know it’s Ron Townson’s gentle pop-croon in the lead…but we do! Ron told Susan Aglio & myself in a post-5th Reunion Tour opening night interview circa ‘90/91: “It’s one of my personal favorites, in fact, my son thinks it could be re-done…it could work today.” And it still does…with its meditative mood from the classic STONED SOUL PICNIC album…and who doesn’t love a tune that contains the term “phosphorescent light!”

The fans say…

Brian Medoro I loved this one. It was a unique cut from a new lead at the time. A sort of break from the group vocals. Echoey, dreamy, contemporary and very 60’s but could play in any era.

Joe Peltonovich  And how about Joe Osborn’s amazing bass lines. Love this song!

Rich Wilson A beautiful song; I love Marilyn and Florence’s haunting background harmonies!

Susan Aglio Thank you, Robert, for a wonderful memory of talking to Ron…  Yes, I do remember “where and when”!

Joel Jordan Thank You!! I haven’t heard the song in SO long…

Loretta Sorensen: “The Sailboat Song” was always one of my favorite songs, too.

Blake Morant The words, “smooth, subtle, and contemplative” come to mind as I hear this track… it’s “neo-champagne soul!”

Take that “Sailboat” ride at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqbd_b10R2o

“Eli’s Coming” from “Live!!” Oh, that “mustache twirling,” delicious delivery by “Sweets” in the lead (not to mention his mischievous laugh) showcases his theatrical side and makes for another jewel in Ron’s versatile crown. Certainly worth a fresh 5th-listen for that “live” excitement!

The fans say…

Carlene Schultz Owen I love this one! Marilyn and Florence’s intro is absolutely haunting.

Michael John Kitner This is a great performance by Ron!  Love Marilyn and Florence’s intro! Great song by Laura Nyro!

Blake Morant “Eli’s Coming” remains a 5D classic in my book. One of the few cover songs that rivals the original. Ron had the best sinister laugh in the business, save maybe the late great Vincent Price (remember “Thriller”?)

Experience “Eli’s Coming” at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRi7JPf3Iko

“Where Do I Begin” Previously in the vaults for 3 decades, Ron’s version of “Where Do I Begin” (Theme from “Love Story”) was arranged for recording by Rene DeKnight to provide “Sweets” with an equally expansive platform to the one where he delivered the soaring, heart-tugging goods in-concert. Akin to other memorable Ron-lead “live” gems like “Not Again” (which was a prospective theme for “The Godfather,” by the way), “Love Story” stands as one of Ron’s very best “vocal solos” and I was never so proud in getting it released with the Collectors’ Choice expanded re-issue of SOUL & INSPIRATION (in conjunction with Bones Howe & Sony’s Rob Santos.)

The fans say…

Wilma L. Mott “Absotively posolutely” beautiful voice and song.  Robert, thank you for honoring Ron with these memories.

Alain Baptiste Astounding.

Paulette Morant No one can sing it better than Ron! Beautiful harmonies and chords, especially at the end.

Estes John Beautiful and Stirring

Blake Morant Ron’s classical training comes through gloriously in this version of the song. One can understand why it didn’t make it on to the “Soul and Inspiration” LP. The company sought a more R&B feel for the group at that time. That said, I would have argued that “soul” means poignancy, which this song demonstrates admirably. Thank goodness it has been resurrected and we can enjoy it for many years to come. Here’s to the benched “Soul and Inspiration” track.

Renee T Armstead A very haunting song.

Kyle Townson I remember as a child going to see The 5th Dimension in Las Vegas, and after my father’s solo, I looked around and the ENTIRE audience was on their feet for an “extended” standing ovation. Thanks for posting this Robert

“Love Story,” our FOREVER 5th Tribute to Ron is here:

“Pagliacci”   Ron shows his stunning operatic virtuosity. “The show must go on…like the clown in Pagliacci,” Marilyn & Florence would wistfully sing, prefacing Ron’s tour-de-force during The Original 5th Dimension’s concerts of the early ‘70’s. Here, the breathtaking aria is staged for the group’s second network television special, “Traveling Sunshine Show.”

–Honorable mention:  “What Do I Need To Be Me” from the LIVING TOGETHER, GROWING TOGETHER album. A song of self-actualization, many fans like Martha Vink found Ron’s solo an important, empowering tune.

More Thoughts from Special Fans…

Renee Armstead: I love so many of the Sweet Man’s solos. One friend of mine still remembers how clearly he hears him singing on “Good News” off of the “Stoned Soul Picnic” album. I think my faves would have to be “MacArthur Park” and “Eli’s Coming” from the “Live” album.

Dale Kocik: He was a major part of the 5th Dimension sound. Love his rendition of  “MacArthur Park” on the “Live” album!

Alain Baptiste: Every “Ron solo” was different from the other, all too wonderful!

Douglas C. Charles: He was a gem. Helped me get all the group’s autographs one year. A wonderful man, gone too soon.

John Estes: Ron was not only an amazing song stylist, a one-of-a-kind singer like Nat King Cole, but he was an amazing person as well. I had the chance to meet him once and he was so welcoming and gracious to me. I will never forget his humbleness when I told him how it was such an honor to meet him.

Paulette Morant: Even after all of this time, I’m still adjusting to his being with us in spirit instead of in person. Thank you Robert, for reminding everyone of Ron’s incredible gifts.  His performance of the aria from “Pagliacci” was stratospheric…who can top that
