LaMonte, Marilyn & Billy…Mac’s new book, MarBill’s sold-out show…

LaMonte, Marilyn & Billy:
a Valentine’s in Vegas Escapade!
by Robert-Allan Arno

DeniseRose photoDateline Feb 14:  “After all, The 5th Dimension stood for love,” is part of what I said in introducing the visionary LaMonte McLemore at The Orleans Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas at the book signing event for his long-awaited memoir, “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension:  A Life Fulfilled in Baseball, Photography and Music.”  Receiving cheers from a couple hundred 5th fans, friends and family, a misty-eyed LaMonte concurred as we began the “live talk show” segment of our presentation: “There sure is a whole lotta love in the room!”front cover  Mac and I chatted about everything from the perfect timing of the book’s release–the soon to be 50th anniversary of The 5th Dimension, his mother’s centennial birthday celebration–to the mouthwatering secret behind the book’s “Stoned Soul Gumbo” recipe!  “I don’t know of many memoirs that have a centerfold,” Mac winked adding “and ours has fifty very rare photos from my collection.”  As LaMonte’s as-told-to author, I told the crowd of friendly and familiar faces, “This humble man said he and The 5th won 14 gold and 3 platinum records, and 6 Grammys and he wanted to give them all back to you in the book.”  Indeed, “the singer tells his story” as the group’s founder and mellow bass about so many tunes and albums including the gem “Magic Garden,” the seminal “Portrait,” and the mysterious “Earthbound,” that you’ll just have to dig into the memoir, already receiving rave reviews.  “I always wanted The 5th to go in a more danceable direction, you’ll see why in the ‘Aquarius–The Music Dancing in My Mind’ chapter,” Mac stated. crop this andvegas done Also, woven throughout the book is his cherished Grandma’s golden and feisty wisdom.  About Grandma Gertrude, a Cherokee Indian, LaMonte shared to laughs, “She’d say the sun rises and sets for everyone, we’re the only ones who screw it up in between…and I censored one of the words!”  Florence LaRue, who was appearing in Florida with The current 5th Dimension, sent a lovely congratulatory note which I had the honor of reading to LaMonte, while in attendance at the heartwarming event were Bobette and Kyle Townson, the wife and son of the beloved Ron “Sweets” Townson, plus Harry Elston of The Friends of Distinction and Lawrence Summers of the precursor group to The 5th Dimension, The Hi-Fi’s.  The eternal question, “How did The 5th Dimension get started?” was turned into time for LaMonte to step up to the podium to emote from the book…the “tall tale” skit version of the quintet’s formation with my cuing Mr. Mac to take Sweets’, Florence’s, Marilyn’s and Billy’s parts as well as his own.  After the giggles and applause, questions were fielded from the audience which included special fans and friends like Renee Armstead, Martha Vink, Deniserose Torres, Kim Savage, Loretta Sorensen, Ed Teasdale, John Estes, KCEP radio’s vivacious “Carlaya,” and the clever Andy Gard who had a nifty one about Mac’s “Fred Sanford” connection.  You’ll have to read the book for that Redd Foxx anecdote!

lamonte mac final final finalWith assistance from LaMonte’s lovely wife, Mieko, while lots and lots of books were signed and photo ops occurred, we waited for the “guest starring” arrival of Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., who joined us after their sound-check at the hotel’s theater, taking to our afternoon stage to a thunderous ovation.  Marilyn smiled brightly, “We see so many awesome people here, we are overwhelmed, and so happy to support LaMonte’s memoir.”  Mac presented MarBill with a framed enlargement of a photo he took of the twosome as Billy observed buoyantly, “This is a favorite, from the back of our ‘Many Faces of Love’ project.”  As I said while intro-ing the 45 years married, eternally youthful duo, “one of the most beautiful women in entertainment, and a true gentleman of Soul” were anticipating their sold-out concert, later that evening at the Orleans showroom.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd thus, a few hours later, we got to behold a Pop-Soul, Blues & Torch array of delectable McCoo & Davis goodies just for Valentine’s Day like a medley of “My Funny Valentine” with “Your Precious Love,” as even “Wedding Bell Blues” took on new meaning.  Tons of greatest hits amid Billy’s St. Louis Blues and Marilyn’s “Showboat” Broadway recreation were just what cupid ordered as “How Do You Keep the Music Playing” kept the crowd enthralled to the end.  During the “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” near finale, when MarBill welcomed, “Mac, come on up here!” the crowd went wild as the three reunited like they had never been away from one other, “under the twilight canopy.”OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Currently Marilyn and Billy are singing and sailing on the Soul Train cruise, while LaMonte and I are embarking on his media and book-signing tour with destinations to be announced.  And with reviews like “Delightful,” “captures LaMonte’s true voice…and heart,” and “I couldn’t put it down,” the memoir “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension” is off to a vibrant start. And what could we already add in an addendum to the book?  That Valentine’s Day 2015 was a milestone to remember–just as The 5th Dimension always brought diverse people together, the love was waiting there, in Vegas, in salute of icons who truly made the world a nicer place, and still do.

LaMonte’s book is upbeat, funny, entertaining, insightful and inspiring…yes, even for someone like me that has followed the group’s career for decades! There were a number of historical firsts for him and The 5th I was not aware of. His co-author, Robert-Allan Arno, did a great job of weaving the LaMonte tales together with wisdom from his grandmother’s, in LaMonte’s voice. It’s not just a great book for us baby boomers to take a peek behind some of the music that has been the soundtrack of our lives, but also for Generation X and Y. LaMonte’s example of perseverance, optimism and love is a story for all “ages.” Check it out. —Susie Paige

I learned some things about LaMonte that I didn’t know, yet being a resident of “Hobo Flats” for many years, I can remember a lot of these adventures. I started reading the book after returning from Vegas. I couldn’t put it down. I was astonished by the credits and contributions. I was also on the floor laughing my a** off. The book is so well written by Robert-Allan Arno and LaMonte. It’s an easy read, and LaMonte pulled no punches in his description of people and places. I ain’t just saying this cause he’s my boy, but the book is brilliant. So ya’ll hit Amazon and get yo copy that you will truly enjoy. —Harry Elston of The Friends Of Distinction

McLemore’s memoir is equal parts historical, humorous and inspiring.  Arno states, “Mac goes deep not only into his life’s trailblazing achievements, but into the music of The 5th Dimension.  We go album by album; fans will be entranced with his very unique take on the quintet’s recorded gems, like ‘Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,’ ‘Stoned Soul Picnic’ and lots of rarities. ”  McLemore’s lovely wife, Mieko enthuses, “The book encompasses everything my husband has been wanting to share with the public for years; objectively, his ‘voice’ is thrilling!”  Published under The Soul of the Voice, Ltd. imprint, the 12 chapter journey includes a 50 photo centerfold, comprehensive discography and even a secret recipe!  A member of The 5th Dimension for over 40 years, LaMonte McLemore is also renowned as the photographer of “The Beauty of the Week” for JET magazine for over 5 decades.  He was also a member of the Dodger’s farm system.  The memoir is peppered with countless celebrity anecdotes–from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, from Ray Charles to Pharrell Williams.  The book is recommended by Johnny Mathis, Nancy Sinatra and Neil Sedaka, and is dedicated to Mr. McLemore’s prophetic “Grandma,” and his cherished mother, June, who is currently celebrating her centennial birthday.

Marilyn & Billy Dazzle with “Solid Gold Christmas”

StarMcCoo-and-Davis-hugging-from-The-Brokaw-Co_WEBMarilyn & Billy’s “Solid Gold Christmas”–the East Coast leg of their tour at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in New Jersey–was jam-packed with all the greatest hits and fan favorites…an intermission…and then ANOTHER complete show with stage cheerfully decked out as a “winter wonderland.”  The ravishing Miss McCoo (in three gown changes this concert!) and dapper Mr. Davis performed every style of holiday fare from deeply personal faith-reflecting Inspirational/Gospel, to jaunty Blues, from Jazzy “Jingle Bells,” to Pop confections, Torchy “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” to four-part harmony (think “Christmastime is Here” sans Charlie Brown, but very “Champagne Soul.”)  It was truly Christmas done the “MarBill” way, garnering at least a half-dozen heartfelt standing ovations. And what made it an absolute holiday dream come true?  Our 45 years-married, youthful-looking stars are in better voice than ever, if possible to imagine topping those trademark creamy rich McCoo/tonally-textured Davis cords accompanied by each of their emotionally powerful interpretations. Now, this is the type of show that should be taped for perennial seasonal broadcast! Special kudos to Music Director Darrell Alston.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I leave you with a select song list–this time I sat back and savored it all, no notes!  I told this to Marilyn and Billy afterward and we had tears in our eyes in our hand-holding fellowship.  I think we thought, “What a blessing to have shared such magic for decades and to be able to look forward to continued bright horizons in the new year!”

Robert-Allan Arno

MERRY 5th-MAS!

SANTA 5th

I once asked mega producer of The 5th Dimension, Bones Howe, why the original quintet never recorded a holiday tune or better yet, a Christmas album and his response was practical.  “Robert, it never dawned on me.  The group was on the road so much, touring, that my time in the studio with them was limited.  Don’t get me wrong, recording was first priority for The 5th, but my goal was to keep getting us hits.”

And so, FOREVER 5th DIMENSION brings you some “later day” holiday treats from Santa’s Champagne Soul goody bag, from Marilyn & Billy…Florence…and special new year news from LaMonte…

“Merry 5th-mas!”  from The 5th Dimension Family,

MARBILL’S JINGLE BELLS:  Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. are embarking on their select “Solid Gold Christmas” tour and have lotsa’ concerts already set for the new year!  Check out more at their official Facebook page or at www.mccoodavis.com  Here’s the duo’s jazzy version of “Jingle Bells.”  “We had so much fun arranging this together at the piano,” Marilyn shared with a smile.  Billy added, “Robert, we think we got it just right!”  In this FOREVER 5th DIMENSION production, I tagged the “jazzy bells” with a snippet of The original 5th emoting “Joy to the World”…the Three Dog Night version!

FLORENCE’S “GROWN-UP CHRISTMAS LIST:” In the 90’s, Florence LaRue recorded a limited edition CD single of this modern favorite. It’s been out of print for quite a while (we’ve featured a “live” performance of it, previously), but now a fan has kindly put the recording of “My Grown-up Christmas List” on YouTube. Enjoy this heartwarming interpretation that’s pure LaRue.  And remember, Florence and The current 5th Dimension perform to sold-out crowds all year long.  Visit www.thefifthdimension.org to check the latest touring schedule of Florence with Patrice, Willie, Leonard and Floyd!

MARILYN & DONNA:  During her “Solid Gold” hosting days, on this special Christmas edition, Marilyn was joined by her good friend, Donna Summer for an unforgettable duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful.”  Marilyn and Billy stated to FOREVER 5th, in unison, “We miss Donna.”  We share this stirring duet in memory of Miss Summer.

LaMONTE NEWS:  LaMonte McLemore is excited!  His long-awaited memoir, “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension,” as told to Robert-Allan Arno, promises to be another hit for “Mac,” due at the dawning of new year 2015.  With recommendations by Johnny Mathis, Nancy Sinatra, Neil Sedaka and Otis William of the Temptations, the book’s official release date, plus subsequent tour, and Mac’s media appearances will be announced, soon.  LaMonte invites you to connect with him at his new LinkedIn page for the latest details.

marbill CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. never fail to show their support of our endeavors here at FOREVER 5th DIMENSION, in fact, it was in their suite, post-show at Manhattan’s Cafe Carlyle, where “MarBill” gave their blessing to the concept of FOREVER 5th, 6 years ago.  Today, I’m so pleased and honored to share two correspondences, one from Marilyn, one from both Marilyn & Billy, about our recent coverage of Marilyn’s birthday (Sept. 30th), and the duo’s receipt of the prestigious Gordon Parks award last week, respectively.  Marilyn & Billy are ever a “bright light” to us all–from their artistic integrity, to the example they set with their marriage and faith, to their genuine care for their fans & friends, “we love them so, we always will…”  Robert-Allan Arno

Marilyn writes about “The Marilyn Solos…”

Dear Robert & Fans,

Thank you for that oh, so special piece, “The Marilyn Solos” written for my birthday as a tribute to the songs I’ve recorded over the years. Reading the songs mentioned with the comments from so many friends of the group and Billy & me brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes. Through the years, the times we’ve all spent together and the loyalty displayed by our true, true fans and friends are so moving; special memories like these have a value that words cannot express. The comments from Bones Howe mean so much to me coming from him–the man with the golden ears.

We always wonder what our fans think about our work and what their own favorites are from among the projects we’ve delivered. It was wonderful to read them along with their own recollections of those times in their lives.

And you, Robert, no one can weave all of those elements together in a superb lyrical tapestry like you do. You have a way with words that is truly God’s gift to you. The photo collage is a sweet addition to the whole piece (How many years are represented there?!) Thank you for the idea and execution of a such a concept–a most special birthday gift.

Love,
Marilyn

From Marilyn & Billy about The Gordon Parks Awards…

Hi Robert,

We were so pleasantly surprised when, at the Gordon Parks “Weapon of Choice” Awards event at Fort Scott Community College this past weekend, a special piece was played as an introduction to our interview with the students, teachers and members of the community.  It had been selected as the “perfect way to open our program” by Jill Warford, the Exec. Director of the Gordon Parks Museum/Center for Culture and Diversity (that’s a mouthful, isn’t it, but the best way to give her her “props!”  She’s done a beautiful job with the Center, an incredible reminder of Gordon’s innumerable accomplishments in his lifetime.)   As we sat there and watched the video, we began thinking, “This feels like Robert. If this is from him, won’t he be surprised that he’s playing a significant part in this tribute to us??”  When we saw your credit come up, we said, “We knew it!”  You were there with us, just as you were in person at the Friars’ Tribute…well, not exactly the same…but your presence was definitely felt!

It was a wonderful weekend.  The people were so warm and really made us feel welcomed.  They enjoyed our interview, and especially appreciated our testimony about how the Lord continues to play a significant part in our lives.  It was an experience we will carry with us.  Thank you for your part, even if you didn’t know it.  You’ve done so many beautiful tributes to us over the years, we felt so good to see one of them being enjoyed by people who have little knowledge of all the things we’ve done that you laid out so beautifully in “You Make Me Feel Brand New”.

We had to let you know how delighted we were, and as always, how much we appreciate you!!

Love,
Billy & Marilyn

Labor Day 5th Memory…

It was ’71 and after a major summer touring schedule in the states (NY fans STILL talk about the Forest Hills stadium appearance!) and a top-rated network TV special (“Traveling Sunshine Show”), The 5th Dimension–Marilyn, Florence, Billy, Ronald & LaMonte– were the featured guests for the finale of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. The songs performed were a LIVE version of “Light Sings,” then Marilyn stepped forward to unveil The 5th’s new single, “Never My Love.” It was all pretty thrilling!light sings all over the world light sings photo light sings two

Robert: Let’s have some pop cultural 5th-MarBill TV trivia fun!
There’s a bunch of “goodies,” for instance, the fans know The 5th Dimension is referenced on “The Brady Bunch” because one of the kids was trying to get someone popular to perform at a dance or the prom. You can make out a glossy of The original 5th on the wall of one of the kids in “Good Times.” I think it was the character, Carlton on “The Fresh Prince” who liked The 5th Dimension…even Jon Cryer’s character on “Two and a Half Men,” I’ve noticed his ringtone plays The 5th’s “Up-Up and Away!”

Marilyn: (laughs) Oh my, Robert, you’ve seen things we haven’t seen!

Billy: We have to check these out!

Robert: And then talk show host Wendy Williams modeled her jumpsuit asking the audience, “Do I look like one of The 5th Dimension, do I look like Marilyn McCoo?!”

Billy:  Wendy!

Marilyn:  (laughs)  Now, we heard about that one!

Robert:   She’s so much a part of today’s media scene, how does it feel to know you are still being referenced?

Billy: It’s nice, it’s recognition, it’s great to know our stuff still rates…

Marilyn: I mean we’re talking thirty or more years later…absolutely awesome!

On Creating & Collaborations

Robert: You’re always so enthusiastic and forthcoming about your recordings, you “take us there” in so many ways. It reminds me of the studio experience of The 5th Dimension “creating” with Burt Bacharach for “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” during that TV special of the ’70’s called “Burt Bacharach in Shangri-lah”…there’s a lot of footage of The 5th brainstorming with Burt that’s priceless.

Marilyn: Yes, what we did on the Burt Bacharach special was try to show in a brief way to the home audience what actually happened in putting that song together…we took little pieces and elements of it…we couldn’t really show everything because it took…

Billy: two or three hours to do it.

Marilyn: So we tried to show the concept and energy of what a brainstorming session would be like. Whenever you work with a giant like Burt Bacharach…

Billy: We worked with Mel Tomé once which was beautiful.

Robert: I remember that, for the PBS Christmas special of the late ’70’s…

Marilyn: Being in his dressing room and we’re working with Mel coming up with this 3 part harmony concept for the songs…you work with giants like that and it’s breathtaking…and it really keeps you on your toes!

Billy: It keeps you sharp because the thing is you don’t want to sit up there like you don’t know what you’re doing (laughs).

Marilyn: You know they’re thinking, “You were a member of The 5th Dimension, singing all those beautiful harmonies,” so let’s not go in there and blow it!

Billy: With Mel, of course we were arranging lots of Jazz parts in rehearsal…that’s my favorite Christmas show…

Rarities & More Rarities, by Request!

Robert: I’d love to hit the “Rarities Department” as we always do in our interviews. I always wait for the moment when Marilyn exclaims, “Oh, I loved that!” when talking about a favorite recording…

Marilyn & Billy: (laughs)

Robert: Let’s start with “Earthbound.” Top of the list, meaning fans keep waiting and waiting for this final album by The (original) 5th Dimension to be reissued on CD. (Note: “Earthbound” was re-issued in spring ’14 on Real Gone Music) Jimmy Webb who produced it told me he wanted it to be “The Magic Garden” album–Part 2 but he wasn’t exactly able to execute it as intended, that he was going through some personal stuff. I remember Billy sang me a snippet of “Be Here Now” when we were interviewing during The original 5th’s reunion tour. What are your feelings today about “Earthbound” and why do you think the fans are almost obsessed with it.

Marilyn: Are they?

Billy: Yes, I can understand that, it’s sentimental. At the time it was basically the end of an era. That was the last album the original group recorded together and we went “Up-Up and Away” in the beginning so now when we finished up, we’re coming back to earth. I think some of the songs, we were pushing them to be what they could be. I mean, I loved some of the songs from the project…

Marilyn: Baby, may I say a few words. (Speaks emotionally:) It was right after this album that Billy and I left The 5th Dimension and all of the things that went into that decision are there in that album. For that reason it was a very hard album.

Billy: Our hearts were in it when we were recording but now we can listen to it with our minds.

Marilyn: Yes, and fresh ears!

Billy:  Time truly heals…

Robert: The fans all know “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes” is one of Marilyn’s favorites of her solos. The author Dorothea Joyce, who unbelievably was my neighbor in the early ’90’s, gave me a nice interview about it. She not only said she thinks of Marilyn as carrying the torch of Lena Horne, in a contemporary vein, of course, but that she could hear “Love’s Lines” in a different incarnation one day, as a dance tune. And then she took a beat and said, “Well only if Marilyn, herself re-recorded it.”

Marilyn: I’m totally flattered and yes, I love “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes,” but I can’t imagine it as a dance record. But as I always say, one has to stay open (laughs)!

Robert: I was pretty thrilled to produce the YouTube video of Marilyn’s “I’m On Your Side” from the sentimental movie, Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two,” starring Marsha Mason. The song was never formally released as a single, and I’ve never gotten such a deluge of comments from people talking about how they’ve searched for the tune and how much it personally means to them.  May I share some examples with you?

Marilyn & Billy:  Yes!

Robert:  One woman wrote, “I have been singing ‘I’m On Your Side’ to my husband for years;” a man wrote, “This song holds so many incredible memories for my beautiful wife and I. We have looked high and low for it, thank you for giving it a new lease;” a fan from Australia commented, “I am eternally grateful for the magical and healing tones of the exquisite Marilyn McCoo on this oh so rare track.”

Marilyn: Oh wow, wow…I am very moved.

Robert: Do you remember anything about the recording of the song, Marilyn?

Marilyn: I just remember that I really liked the song, I was trying to decide how simple to keep it, or to try to do something bigger with it…but it just seemed like with the movie being what it was, that simplicity was what it required.

Billy: The movie dictated the approach.

Marilyn: Sometimes you’re a piece of the puzzle, and you want to take your part and fit it into the total piece…so you make a choice, a decision about what to do with it…

Robert: How ingenious that finesse is what gives this particular interpretation such grandeur and such a powerful, overwhelming listener response as a result.

Marilyn: Bones Howe (producer of The 5th Dimension) used to talk to me about that, sometimes we’d start working on a song and he’d say, “Keep the lines simple, keep it simple!” and he and I used to struggle with that in the studio because sometimes I’d want to do more with the melody. And when I was recording “I’m On Your Side,” I thought about Bones.

Robert: Here’s another question the fans are dying to know. You worked with Don Davis who so brightly produced your premier duet album, “I Hope We Get to Love in Time” (Note: To be re-issued July 28th on Big Break CD’s).  But before you made the decision to go in a duo direction after leaving The 5th, Marilyn recorded some solo singles with Don that have never surfaced. The fans always are clamoring for them to be un-vaulted. Any recollection of them?

Marilyn: Those were great songs, they’d be in the ABC (Records) vaults. I really enjoyed working with Don and yes, before Billy and I did our duet recordings with him, I did 3 solos with him. And one of them was called, “Time is a Restless Old Man.”

Robert: What a title!

Marilyn: And I think that that song could have been a hit. “Time (pause) is a Restless (pause) Old Man!” (All laugh)

Billy: And I was doing solos, too with another producer, you may remember, “Three Steps From True Love.”

Robert: Yes, certainly! And I also remember Billy’s Gospel project of the 80’s with Rev. James Cleveland which has been recently re-released on your own label as “The Love of God” CD. Sometimes I think of Billy’s solo from The 5th Dimension’s “Individually & Collectively” album of ’72 as…well, inspirational…in fact fans will use the song’s title itself as a mantra to encourage someone who may be “going through.” And that song is “Leave a Little Room.”

Marilyn: Ah…

Billy: That was a powerful song. It was one of my favorites. I think that song is a true statement of life. How we have to deal with situations that come up in our lives. We always have to “leave a little room to start again” because if we don’t…

Marilyn: Billy’s performance on that song was awesome, awesome!

Billy: I haven’t heard it in quite a while…

Marilyn: I can still hear it in my head, even though we haven’t listened to it in a long time…

Robert: It’s almost an unheralded performance yet so spine-tingling, as Marilyn said, it stays, it stays with fans, it never seems to go away. The quietude that Billy starts with…the build of it, the feeling of unbridled freedom and hope as it soars…Billy spins the thought process with the notes, through contemplation to elation to resolution.

Marilyn: Mm hmm…

Billy: Your words are poetic, Robert.

Robert: Well deserved. Yes, “Leave a Little Room” is nearly a Gospel tune in its own right, that’s why I put it in the same sentence with “The Love of God” reissue, isn’t that interesting?

Marilyn: You know what’s interesting about “The Love of God,” the way that Billy sings that song, it’s always a very special moment wherever he does it. He had sung it one time in a church and this woman actually swooned (laughs), but I can understand it, Billy delivers it with such passion every time…and it’s always the high point of any performance that we do…

Billy: It’s singing about the Lord, so that is the high point…

Marilyn: That’s right.

Robert: Always a brilliant thought from you, Billy because that is indeed the ultimate. Bones was saying to me last time we spoke, “Billy just hits his note in the center, and it hits you right in the heart,” see there’s “the heart” again…

Marilyn: Beautiful and true.

Robert: And there’s something about “The Love of God” that’s so centered in its total delivery, I can see where, via the concept of “cause and effect,” it would make someone “fall out.”

Billy: That’s not me, that’s the Lord working through me. I give Him credit for that, I thank Him for the gift he gave me, so I have to use it.

Robert: How soul-stirring, it’s like we’re having prayer as we talk about these songs.

Marilyn: (laughs) Yes we always get back to that, don’t we?

Robert: There is such a Godly core about everything you’ve ever done and it’s all about uniting people, “seeing the face of God on every person we encounter,” as we were talking about pre-interview, during our fellowship. I’ve never known entertainers to have that type of effect on their fans, because of the unconditional love you give to them in your work and as people.

Billy: Well, thank you for what you do, Robert. Your work for The 5th Dimension and our duet legacy, for the fans is educational, keeps them current, it’s spiritual, uplifting, it’s what keeps our fans near.

Marilyn: We think the world of you.

Robert: And on behalf of the fans, as the song goes, “The world’s a nicer place” because of you two!

Marilyn: We’ve really enjoyed this!

Billy: God bless you.
