It’s July 5th Time!

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

Longtime “5th Dimension fan,” Brian Medoro just quipped as we were wishing each other a good summer, “Well you know, we 5D folks always celebrate the 5th, not the 4th!” alluding to the famous “July 5th Album,” a melange of memorable tunes Marilyn McCoo cutely referred to as, “our not so greatest hits!”mar solo shot

And thus at FOREVER 5th DIMENSION, our “summer of love ’15” begins, as LaMonte McLemore just referenced to cheers at his smash book-signing event at Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar in NYC: “Above all, The 5th Dimension always stood for love!” I co-hosted the evening with “Mac,” and we had a blast with our on-stage chat, then taking questions from the charming audience of long-time fans and special friends.  Mac’s media tour had him literally talking to top morning show radio hosts all over the country, from Jimmy Howes in greater New Jersey, to Freddie Bell in the Twin Cities, to the “Mojo” in Philly, not to mention Teddy Smith in NYC as well as the iconic “Cousin Brucie” on Sirius…with more media and signing stops to come throughout ’15.  According to Mr. Mac, “People have asked me to write my memoir for years…and judging by our 5-star reviews, the timing is just perfect!”  As his “as told to author,” I concur!  master 11

And summer ’15 leads to an important fall milestone, October to be exact, as Florence Now RareFlorence LaRue celebrates her 50th year with The 5th Dimension, hard to believe of the age-proof glamour girl, but true!  And don’t forget to check out Florence and The 5th’s (Patrice, Willie, Leonard & Floyd) sizzling summertime Champagne Soul tour schedule at http://www.thefifthdimension.org  RARE ALTERN 5th

Oh, and guess what, in late July, our Blog will celebrate its 7th anniversary while “MarBill” aka McCoo & Davis celebrate their 46th year of marriage!  We’ll be doing something very special for the FOREVER 5th anniversary…some “lovin’ stew” is truly cookin’…stay tuned!

Bringing People Together

Nov. 8, 2014–As biographer of The original 5th Dimension and LaMonte McLemore, I was recently telling Billy Davis, Jr. that the phrase I like to use is “The 5th Dimension brought (and bring) people together in unity, through their essence of harmony.”  Billy smiled, thought quietly in his pastoral way, and responded with his inimitable energy, “You got it!”  It’s an exciting time as Marilyn (McCoo) & Billy soon embark on their select “Solid Gold Christmas” tour, Florence LaRue & The 5th Dimension are already planning their Champagne Soul ’15 touring schedule, and LaMonte McLemore & I anticipate the release of his sizzling memoir, FROM HOBO FLATS to THE 5th DIMENSION, right at the launch of the new year–friends, you should see the cool cover…and ALL the rare photos…not to mention the 12 carefully themed and celeb & music-studded chapters!  As his as-told-to author, I can attest that “Mac” doesn’t quit until he makes you laugh…and think!

In the spirit of ‘bringing people together,” here’s a compendium of special items that have come into FOREVER 5th, let’s call it our November scrapbook,  that I’d like to share with you today.  Simply, ENJOY!  —Robert

Lines of Love from Marilyn & Billy…

marbill CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. never fail to show their support of our endeavors here at FOREVER 5th DIMENSION, in fact, it was in their suite, post-show at Manhattan’s Cafe Carlyle, where “MarBill” gave their blessing to the concept of FOREVER 5th, 6 years ago.  Today, I’m so pleased and honored to share two correspondences, one from Marilyn, one from both Marilyn & Billy, about our recent coverage of Marilyn’s birthday (Sept. 30th), and the duo’s receipt of the prestigious Gordon Parks award last week, respectively.  Marilyn & Billy are ever a “bright light” to us all–from their artistic integrity, to the example they set with their marriage and faith, to their genuine care for their fans & friends, “we love them so, we always will…”  Robert-Allan Arno

Marilyn writes about “The Marilyn Solos…”

Dear Robert & Fans,

Thank you for that oh, so special piece, “The Marilyn Solos” written for my birthday as a tribute to the songs I’ve recorded over the years. Reading the songs mentioned with the comments from so many friends of the group and Billy & me brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes. Through the years, the times we’ve all spent together and the loyalty displayed by our true, true fans and friends are so moving; special memories like these have a value that words cannot express. The comments from Bones Howe mean so much to me coming from him–the man with the golden ears.

We always wonder what our fans think about our work and what their own favorites are from among the projects we’ve delivered. It was wonderful to read them along with their own recollections of those times in their lives.

And you, Robert, no one can weave all of those elements together in a superb lyrical tapestry like you do. You have a way with words that is truly God’s gift to you. The photo collage is a sweet addition to the whole piece (How many years are represented there?!) Thank you for the idea and execution of a such a concept–a most special birthday gift.

Love,
Marilyn

From Marilyn & Billy about The Gordon Parks Awards…

Hi Robert,

We were so pleasantly surprised when, at the Gordon Parks “Weapon of Choice” Awards event at Fort Scott Community College this past weekend, a special piece was played as an introduction to our interview with the students, teachers and members of the community.  It had been selected as the “perfect way to open our program” by Jill Warford, the Exec. Director of the Gordon Parks Museum/Center for Culture and Diversity (that’s a mouthful, isn’t it, but the best way to give her her “props!”  She’s done a beautiful job with the Center, an incredible reminder of Gordon’s innumerable accomplishments in his lifetime.)   As we sat there and watched the video, we began thinking, “This feels like Robert. If this is from him, won’t he be surprised that he’s playing a significant part in this tribute to us??”  When we saw your credit come up, we said, “We knew it!”  You were there with us, just as you were in person at the Friars’ Tribute…well, not exactly the same…but your presence was definitely felt!

It was a wonderful weekend.  The people were so warm and really made us feel welcomed.  They enjoyed our interview, and especially appreciated our testimony about how the Lord continues to play a significant part in our lives.  It was an experience we will carry with us.  Thank you for your part, even if you didn’t know it.  You’ve done so many beautiful tributes to us over the years, we felt so good to see one of them being enjoyed by people who have little knowledge of all the things we’ve done that you laid out so beautifully in “You Make Me Feel Brand New”.

We had to let you know how delighted we were, and as always, how much we appreciate you!!

Love,
Billy & Marilyn

Happy Birthday, Miss McCoo!

 Happy Birthday Marilyn 2013

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MISS McCOO
FOREVER 5th DIMENSION Celebrates “The Marilyn Solos”
by Robert-Allan Arno & the Fans

September 30th–  It’s that memorable date when we get to celebrate not only the exquisite lady but “The Marilyn Solos,” those timeless recorded jewels that become impossibly more lovely with every year, just like La McCoo herself. Marilyn told me for FOREVER 5th DIMENSION that, “Even above our intensive touring, our recording sessions were always top priority.” Producer Bones Howe added, “Marilyn was so focused in the studio, all the members of The 5th Dimension were utmost professionals, but she would nail those solos of hers in a few takes, she always knew exactly where she was going.” The gracious songstress responded, “Oh, how wonderful to hear that from Bones, you know, my husband Billy (Davis, Jr.) helped me greatly with my phrasing.”  And greats like Neil Sedaka (“Puppet Man,” “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing,”), Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson (“California Soul”), and Richard Addrisi (“Never My Love”) have told me for FOREVER 5th that Marilyn’s heartfelt way with a tune, from her torch treatments to more playful stylings, not only make her a beguiling star but a true “singer’s singer.”  And wait, the multi-Tony award winning Audra MacDonald  just cited Marilyn as an initial influence; “Marilyn McCoo has a beautiful voice,” she giggles like a kid, still enamored of the 7-time Grammy winning legend.

Of course the fans are “smitten” too and our special survey of select longtime members of the “McCoo Crew” certainly heralds a diverse array of faves. Just as REWOUND Radio this past weekend honored Marilyn’s birthday with her personal favorite solo, the transcendental “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes,” Susan Aglio and Dave Maze both cast their votes for the soul-stirring “If I Could Reach You.”  “I think of ‘One Less Bell to Answer’ by Burt Bacharach and Hal David as Marilyn’s signature,” firmly states Susie Paige, while Alain Baptiste recalls, “‘One Less Bell’ was a major hit on our top Soul stations like WBLS, as well as on the Pop charts.”  Fans Deniserose Torres and Jonathan Weitz who just saw Marilyn & Billy sizzle at the Catalina Jazz club, share their joint account, “I’m speechless to describe Marilyn’s ‘One Less Bell,’ it’s too beautiful for any words I could come up with,” says Denise, while Jonathan concurs about the song’s “live” version, “Nothing is better than when Marilyn sings ‘One Less Bell’ to a well-deserved standing ovation!new mar mar

Brian Medoro reflects on the poignancy of “Everything’s Been Changed,” a Paul Anka-penned treatise on lost love that Loretta Sorensen adores.  Sorensen, a dedicated McCoo-follower declares, “I feel so fortunate to have heard Marilyn’s music most of my life!”  Marilyn laughs in her mellifluous way, “Even as a young girl, I loved a sad song.  I’d be singing about ‘the man that got away’ to the refrigerator light!”  “‘When Did I Lose Your Love’ is one not often mentioned,” reminds Douglas C. Charles, about Marilyn’s “velvety” take from the rare “Earthbound” album, finally re-issued on CD this past year. Another rarity is “House for Sale,” from “Soul & Inspiration.”  John Estes comments about this story-song, “Every syllable is heard as she caresses the lyric.” “It wasn’t recorded, but I so strongly remember Marilyn’s in-concert version of Paul Williams’ ‘Loneliness,'” enthuses Renee Armstead.  And in my recent review of Marilyn & Billy’s latest 2 volume LIVE CD, I had this to say about an all-new Marilyn showstopper:

Marilyn McCoo, whose eternal beauty seemingly reflects the incandescent soul of her silky voice, does something uncanny here.  She’s found a tune from a recent Clint Eastwood movie that’s “pure Marilyn,” it seamlessly fits as an extension of her body of solos that are her fans’ cherished gems. There’s a soupcon of “Never My Love,” “If I Could Reach You,” “Open Your Window,” and more, in her spectacularly delicate yet empowered treatment of the jazzy ballad, “Why Should I Care.”  Yes, McCoo should sing every theme song of every movie out there, I just bet you’ll be thinking!

For another movie theme, one that didn’t get released formally but is a smash on YouTube as a FOREVER 5th DIMENSION production, savor “I’m On Your Side.”  From the classic flick, CHAPTER TWO, Marilyn’s gentle tour-de-force has garnered an outpouring of emotional comments from fans, world-wide.  Here’s the link to that treasure:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiv6zYgyS-8

Lilting fare like the chart-topping gold of “Wedding Bell Blues” (Laura Nyro), and “Last Night I Didn’t Get to Sleep” (Tony Macaulay) were top jukebox songs of all time…an interesting factoid as we “Flashback” (Alan O’Day).  “For the creamiest-voiced chanteuse of them all, Marilyn’s ‘Never My Love’ is huge!” exclaims Gabriel Pellegrino. Emiko “Emmy” Ikeda remarks all the way from Japan, that also unforgettable are the inspirational “The Me Nobody Knows,” plus the first recorded version of “Saving All My Love for You.”

As a perennial favorite, Marilyn’s gossamer yet mighty interpretation of “O Holy Night” from her Christmas CD, is one fans look forward to her delivering on this year’s “Solid Gold” Christmas tour.   McCoo & Davis will present a festive evening of selections from hits to holiday chestnuts done with sparkling Pop-Soul. (see appearance schedule at http://www.mccoodavis.com)

“I wanted that song to have a different feel than anything I’ve done,” Marilyn confided to FOREVER 5th DIMENSION about the swoon-inducing “Open Your Window.”  “And take a deep sigh,” the diva of finesse continues to “coo” as the Harry Nilsson-penned delectable unfolds. We’ve been collectively taking that sigh, mesmerized by Miss McCoo on a journey past and present, with the delightful promise of more “magic moments” from Marilyn, on the horizon. Leave it to Marilyn McCoo to deliver a gift to her countless fans, as we toast her own special day.

It’s Marilyn & Billy’s 45th Wedding Anniversary!

MarBill 45 Anniversary Collage Label

For six years, FOREVER 5th DIMENSION has had the honor & pleasure of presenting a “cavalcade” of special features on Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., from exclusive interviews (carefully archived for re-issue including one today!), to rare video productions & special reviews. In turn, we’ve been blessed to have the lovely validation of “MarBill,” time & time again. In celebration of their 45th wedding anniversary on Sat., July 26th, we bring an excerpted, refreshed Q & A conducted 3 summers ago, that’s just as relevant today.  We were having  so much fun with this one, that “MarBill” called me back for a second day of chat, that’s how sweet they really are!  Let’s all toast the duo’s enduring love, artistic excellence, and ever-inspiring essence! —Robert-Allan Arno

MARILYN McCOO & BILLY DAVIS, JR.: REFLECTIONS of GREATS
by Robert-Allan Arno

(previously issued, 2011)

Billy: You know Robert, when Marilyn and I are singing a tune, it’s really a mini movie to act in, that’s what songs are…yes, they give us a chance to act, to portray our vision.

Robert: Brilliant Billy! And I sincerely think you’re the King and Queen of doing mini movies in your songs.

Marilyn & Billy: (laughs) Thank you.

The 5th-MarBill: TV Trivia Time

Robert: Let’s have some pop cultural 5th-MarBill TV trivia fun!
There’s a bunch of “goodies,” for instance, the fans know The 5th Dimension is referenced on “The Brady Bunch” because one of the kids was trying to get someone popular to perform at a dance or the prom. You can make out a glossy of The original 5th on the wall of one of the kids in “Good Times.” I think it was the character, Carlton on “The Fresh Prince” who liked The 5th Dimension…even Jon Cryer’s character on “Two and a Half Men,” I’ve noticed his ringtone plays The 5th’s “Up-Up and Away!”

Marilyn: (laughs) Oh my, Robert, you’ve seen things we haven’t seen!

Billy: We have to check these out!

Robert: And then talk show host Wendy Williams modeled her jumpsuit asking the audience, “Do I look like one of The 5th Dimension, do I look like Marilyn McCoo?!”

Billy:  Wendy!

Marilyn:  (laughs)  Now, we heard about that one!

Robert:   She’s so much a part of today’s media scene, how does it feel to know you are still being referenced?

Billy: It’s nice, it’s recognition, it’s great to know our stuff still rates…

Marilyn: I mean we’re talking thirty or more years later…absolutely awesome!

On Creating & Collaborations

Robert: You’re always so enthusiastic and forthcoming about your recordings, you “take us there” in so many ways. It reminds me of the studio experience of The 5th Dimension “creating” with Burt Bacharach for “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” during that TV special of the ’70’s called “Burt Bacharach in Shangri-lah”…there’s a lot of footage of The 5th brainstorming with Burt that’s priceless.

Marilyn: Yes, what we did on the Burt Bacharach special was try to show in a brief way to the home audience what actually happened in putting that song together…we took little pieces and elements of it…we couldn’t really show everything because it took…

Billy: two or three hours to do it.

Marilyn: So we tried to show the concept and energy of what a brainstorming session would be like. Whenever you work with a giant like Burt Bacharach…

Billy: We worked with Mel Tomé once which was beautiful.

Robert: I remember that, for the PBS Christmas special of the late ’70’s…

Marilyn: Being in his dressing room and we’re working with Mel coming up with this 3 part harmony concept for the songs…you work with giants like that and it’s breathtaking…and it really keeps you on your toes!

Billy: It keeps you sharp because the thing is you don’t want to sit up there like you don’t know what you’re doing (laughs).

Marilyn: You know they’re thinking, “You were a member of The 5th Dimension, singing all those beautiful harmonies,” so let’s not go in there and blow it!

Billy: With Mel, of course we were arranging lots of Jazz parts in rehearsal…that’s my favorite Christmas show…

Rarities & More Rarities, by Request!

Robert: I’d love to hit the “Rarities Department” as we always do in our interviews. I always wait for the moment when Marilyn exclaims, “Oh, I loved that!” when talking about a favorite recording…

Marilyn & Billy: (laughs)

Robert: Let’s start with “Earthbound.” Top of the list, meaning fans keep waiting and waiting for this final album by The (original) 5th Dimension to be reissued on CD. (Note: “Earthbound” was re-issued in spring ’14 on Real Gone Music) Jimmy Webb who produced it told me he wanted it to be “The Magic Garden” album–Part 2 but he wasn’t exactly able to execute it as intended, that he was going through some personal stuff. I remember Billy sang me a snippet of “Be Here Now” when we were interviewing during The original 5th’s reunion tour. What are your feelings today about “Earthbound” and why do you think the fans are almost obsessed with it.

Marilyn: Are they?

Billy: Yes, I can understand that, it’s sentimental. At the time it was basically the end of an era. That was the last album the original group recorded together and we went “Up-Up and Away” in the beginning so now when we finished up, we’re coming back to earth. I think some of the songs, we were pushing them to be what they could be. I mean, I loved some of the songs from the project…

Marilyn: Baby, may I say a few words. (Speaks emotionally:) It was right after this album that Billy and I left The 5th Dimension and all of the things that went into that decision are there in that album. For that reason it was a very hard album.

Billy: Our hearts were in it when we were recording but now we can listen to it with our minds.

Marilyn: Yes, and fresh ears!

Billy:  Time truly heals…

Robert: The fans all know “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes” is one of Marilyn’s favorites of her solos. The author Dorothea Joyce, who unbelievably was my neighbor in the early ’90’s, gave me a nice interview about it. She not only said she thinks of Marilyn as carrying the torch of Lena Horne, in a contemporary vein, of course, but that she could hear “Love’s Lines” in a different incarnation one day, as a dance tune. And then she took a beat and said, “Well only if Marilyn, herself re-recorded it.”

Marilyn: I’m totally flattered and yes, I love “Love’s Lines, Angles and Rhymes,” but I can’t imagine it as a dance record. But as I always say, one has to stay open (laughs)!

Robert: I was pretty thrilled to produce the YouTube video of Marilyn’s “I’m On Your Side” from the sentimental movie, Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two,” starring Marsha Mason. The song was never formally released as a single, and I’ve never gotten such a deluge of comments from people talking about how they’ve searched for the tune and how much it personally means to them.  May I share some examples with you?

Marilyn & Billy:  Yes!

Robert:  One woman wrote, “I have been singing ‘I’m On Your Side’ to my husband for years;” a man wrote, “This song holds so many incredible memories for my beautiful wife and I. We have looked high and low for it, thank you for giving it a new lease;” a fan from Australia commented, “I am eternally grateful for the magical and healing tones of the exquisite Marilyn McCoo on this oh so rare track.”

Marilyn: Oh wow, wow…I am very moved.

Robert: Do you remember anything about the recording of the song, Marilyn?

Marilyn: I just remember that I really liked the song, I was trying to decide how simple to keep it, or to try to do something bigger with it…but it just seemed like with the movie being what it was, that simplicity was what it required.

Billy: The movie dictated the approach.

Marilyn: Sometimes you’re a piece of the puzzle, and you want to take your part and fit it into the total piece…so you make a choice, a decision about what to do with it…

Robert: How ingenious that finesse is what gives this particular interpretation such grandeur and such a powerful, overwhelming listener response as a result.

Marilyn: Bones Howe (producer of The 5th Dimension) used to talk to me about that, sometimes we’d start working on a song and he’d say, “Keep the lines simple, keep it simple!” and he and I used to struggle with that in the studio because sometimes I’d want to do more with the melody. And when I was recording “I’m On Your Side,” I thought about Bones.

Robert: Here’s another question the fans are dying to know. You worked with Don Davis who so brightly produced your premier duet album, “I Hope We Get to Love in Time” (Note: To be re-issued July 28th on Big Break CD’s).  But before you made the decision to go in a duo direction after leaving The 5th, Marilyn recorded some solo singles with Don that have never surfaced. The fans always are clamoring for them to be un-vaulted. Any recollection of them?

Marilyn: Those were great songs, they’d be in the ABC (Records) vaults. I really enjoyed working with Don and yes, before Billy and I did our duet recordings with him, I did 3 solos with him. And one of them was called, “Time is a Restless Old Man.”

Robert: What a title!

Marilyn: And I think that that song could have been a hit. “Time (pause) is a Restless (pause) Old Man!” (All laugh)

Billy: And I was doing solos, too with another producer, you may remember, “Three Steps From True Love.”

Robert: Yes, certainly! And I also remember Billy’s Gospel project of the 80’s with Rev. James Cleveland which has been recently re-released on your own label as “The Love of God” CD. Sometimes I think of Billy’s solo from The 5th Dimension’s “Individually & Collectively” album of ’72 as…well, inspirational…in fact fans will use the song’s title itself as a mantra to encourage someone who may be “going through.” And that song is “Leave a Little Room.”

Marilyn: Ah…

Billy: That was a powerful song. It was one of my favorites. I think that song is a true statement of life. How we have to deal with situations that come up in our lives. We always have to “leave a little room to start again” because if we don’t…

Marilyn: Billy’s performance on that song was awesome, awesome!

Billy: I haven’t heard it in quite a while…

Marilyn: I can still hear it in my head, even though we haven’t listened to it in a long time…

Robert: It’s almost an unheralded performance yet so spine-tingling, as Marilyn said, it stays, it stays with fans, it never seems to go away. The quietude that Billy starts with…the build of it, the feeling of unbridled freedom and hope as it soars…Billy spins the thought process with the notes, through contemplation to elation to resolution.

Marilyn: Mm hmm…

Billy: Your words are poetic, Robert.

Robert: Well deserved. Yes, “Leave a Little Room” is nearly a Gospel tune in its own right, that’s why I put it in the same sentence with “The Love of God” reissue, isn’t that interesting?

Marilyn: You know what’s interesting about “The Love of God,” the way that Billy sings that song, it’s always a very special moment wherever he does it. He had sung it one time in a church and this woman actually swooned (laughs), but I can understand it, Billy delivers it with such passion every time…and it’s always the high point of any performance that we do…

Billy: It’s singing about the Lord, so that is the high point…

Marilyn: That’s right.

Robert: Always a brilliant thought from you, Billy because that is indeed the ultimate. Bones was saying to me last time we spoke, “Billy just hits his note in the center, and it hits you right in the heart,” see there’s “the heart” again…

Marilyn: Beautiful and true.

Robert: And there’s something about “The Love of God” that’s so centered in its total delivery, I can see where, via the concept of “cause and effect,” it would make someone “fall out.”

Billy: That’s not me, that’s the Lord working through me. I give Him credit for that, I thank Him for the gift he gave me, so I have to use it.

Robert: How soul-stirring, it’s like we’re having prayer as we talk about these songs.

Marilyn: (laughs) Yes we always get back to that, don’t we?

Robert: There is such a Godly core about everything you’ve ever done and it’s all about uniting people, “seeing the face of God on every person we encounter,” as we were talking about pre-interview, during our fellowship. I’ve never known entertainers to have that type of effect on their fans, because of the unconditional love you give to them in your work and as people.

Billy: Well, thank you for what you do, Robert. Your work for The 5th Dimension and our duet legacy, for the fans is educational, keeps them current, it’s spiritual, uplifting, it’s what keeps our fans near.

Marilyn: We think the world of you.

Robert: And on behalf of the fans, as the song goes, “The world’s a nicer place” because of you two!

Marilyn: We’ve really enjoyed this!

A Special Message from “MarBill…”

Robert, thank you for the beautiful way you celebrated Billy’s birthday this year at Forever 5th Dimension. The tribute you wrote to him acknowledging his God-given gift, the many special comments from some of the top people in our business recognizing his matchless talent, then sharing the gentle, caring human being you know him to be–this is something that touched Billy so deeply and means so much to him. And to our special fans and friends who shared their own favorite Billy performances, he loved reading every word; they were so moving.

We thank you again, Robert, for your years of dedication to Forever 5th and MarBill. As we’ve told you many times before, you are a true blessing in our lives. Thank you for the photos, the stories and the memories, old and new.

God bless. We look forward to seeing everyone again, soon!

Love,

What Comes From Our Hearts: Celebrating Billy Davis Jr.’s Birthday

Image

In his memoir, “From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension,” founder of The 5th Dimension and life-long friend, LaMonte McLemore earmarks Billy Davis, Jr.’s interpretation of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” as incomparable, bringing a tear to his eye. As biographer of both The original 5th and “Mac,” I was so proud to have it released (in medley with “People Gotta Be Free”) as a rarity selection on the current CD chart-topper, “Playlist: The Very Best of The 5th Dimension” on Sony-Legacy. Florence LaRue confided to a recent audience at her solo cabaret show, “My all-time favorite song by The 5th Dimension is ‘Misty Roses!’” That’s Billy’s “sweet-soul” side, way back-in-the-day from the very first “Up-Up and Away” album. Compare this to his “flip side,” as both the bluesy “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” and the gritty “Steppin’ In” stop the show “live in person,” and on the exemplary Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.’s latest double volume Live CD!

Dubbed one of our greatest Soul singers by the renown of Maurice White (Earth, Wind and Fire), Eddie Levert (The O’Jays) and Jimmy “Up-Up and Away” Webb, Billy noted recently to Michael Feinstein on his “Song Travels” radio show, “Nat King Cole was a major early inspiration.” In a mini “Master Class” Marilyn & Billy provided at our Blog, FOREVER 5th DIMENSION, Billy’s reminder to artists was to “tell the story…and let your notes highlight the feeling.” “’What comes from the heart, goes to the heart’ is my husband’s motto,” smiled Marilyn.  No wonder Ashford & Simpson picked up on this “heartfelt” quality in The 5th’s fan favorite version of their sizzling composition, “California Soul,” a group song, like “Ashes to Ashes” that is rather Billy-driven. Oh, and the socially-conscious “Ashes” is one of Billy’s personal faves, he shared on the radio a few years back!

REWOUND Radio’s Bob Radil in talking with me about the legacy of The 5th, cited Billy’s improv on “Let the Sunshine In” as a watershed moment in recording history. I responded, “Billy’s call to ‘Sing along with The 5th Dimension’ was irresistible…how could the nation not!” Marilyn continued in our “class,” noting her hubby’s directorial chops, too, “Billy guided my phrasing on ‘One Less Bell,’ in fact, he helped all the members with their solos.”

On Gospel tunes like “The Love of God,” from Billy’s project with Rev. James Cleveland and re-issued, “Billy has made women swoon at our church appearances,” observes Marilyn with a sympathetic giggle. “That’s not me, it’s God working through me,” Billy retorts humbly, and maybe most importantly of all. Famed 5th producer Bones Howe tells me, “On ‘The Magic Garden’ album alone, if you juxtapose ‘Requiem: 820 Latham’ (one of Marilyn’s personal faves) with ‘The Worst That Could Happen’ with ‘Summer’s Daughter’ (the latter, one of Bones’ sentimental likes), you’ll hear all the ‘dimensions’ of Billy.” Indeed, there are so many dimensions, so many more songs with that “Billy Davis, Jr. touch”–his stamp of artistic excellence.

It’s become a yearly tradition to tell us your favorite “Billy tune” while “speaking with your heart” to wish him a Happy Birthday. However, this year for 2015, we present a twist with the following question:

If and when Marilyn & Billy record their next CD of duets with select solos, which all-time classic Soul, Blues, Gospel or American Pop Standard tune would you love Billy to record…or perhaps what previously recorded “Billy solo” would you like him to re-visit?

We’ll send all your “trains of thought” and greetings over to “Sir Davis” and his proud wife of nearly 46 years, the lovely Ms. McCoo, on his special morning of June 26th…our cherished and respected “Gentleman of Soul.”  —Robert-Allan Arno

Here are our 2015  fan “results”–

    • Susan Aglio I would love for Billy to re-record my favorite, “The Singer!” Happy Birthday, Billy! I hope to see you and Marilyn very soon!
    • David Pendleton Without question the best Billy solo is “The Worst That Could Happen!”  I confess he’s inspired me to try and record it!  Happy birthday to a musical hero.
    • Elston Harry Give me a minute!!!
    • Alain Baptiste Robert-Allan, Mariette and I would want Mr. Davis to record his version of the Louis Armstrong perennial WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, we think he’d give it a tender new, excuse the pun, dimension! Happy Birthday and God bless a great man.
    • Andy Gard How about Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”? That has a bluesy feel that Billy could knock out of the park (to borrow a baseball metaphor from Lamonte & you, Robert). BTW, happy birthday, Mr. D!
    • Robert-Allan Arno “That’s Life”…that’s ingenious! Thanks Andy!!
    • Deniserose Torres To re-visit, already my favorite…”Let it Be Me”… Happy birthday Billy..wishing you a wonderful day..
    • Loretta Sorensen That was a difficult task but I would enjoy Billy performing “Fields of Gold” by Sting. It’s so pure and pretty, sort of like Billy’s “Misty Roses,” one of my favorites. Happy Birthday Billy and many more to come!
    • Robert-Allan Arno Thanks Deniserose, Loretta and everyone…this thread is becoming fascinating…perfect for Billy’s day!
    • Susie Paige I would love to hear Billy sing “His Eye is On the Sparrow”. Birthday cake
    • William Q. Singleton (aka Bill Quinn/METROMEDIA RADIO) Robert, I’d really love to hear them sing “Waters of March!” It’s such a sublime song and one of Jobim’s best. It’s probably a long shot, but a complete project of American Pop Standards would really be a treat and give fans an opportunity to see their amazing range and talents as singers.
    • Antonio Pereira Happy Birthday Billy! How’s about you and Marilyn recording your own version of ‘Where Is The Love’?
    • Renee T Armstead Happy Birthday Billy!! It was SO great to see you and Marilyn this past Saturday. The show was the best and Barbara and I were thrilled to be blessed with a front row seat!! As you may remember, my favorite “Billy” tune is “A Change is Gonna Come.”  If and when you and Marilyn record a new CD of duets with select solos, I think you would do a superb job of “Hold On, I’m Coming”, the oldie by Sam and Dave. Meanwhile, God bless you both. Enjoy your birthday Soul Man!

      Renee T Armstead's photo.
    • Douglas C. Charles Billy – Happy Birthday to one awesome singer!! You are so loved and admired. I cherish my recordings of you and the group as well as the wonderful memories of seeing you/meeting you in person. I hope this birthday is your best ever. I wish you love, joy and many happy returns.
    • Estes John Happy Birthday Billy. An updated version of THE SINGER would be great to hear.
    • Paul Corley It would be great to hear a remake of “Feelin’ Alright” or “Half Moon.” Have a Happy Birthday, Billy, and thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
    • Bob Radil Antonio mentioned “Where Is The Love.”  A duet I was thinking of is “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” but oops, they’re both negative and duets! Robert-Allan mentioned a Billy *solo.* First song to come to mind, “When A Man Loves A Woman.” Could that work? This may be a bit corny but it could be preceded by Marilyn doing “Which Way You Going Billy.”
    • Robert-Allan Arno Bob, you are onto something “psychic,” lol…MarBill performed “Where is the Love” on TV back in the day (“The Sonny and Cher Show”) and made it sound quite positive, lol…and Billy did record “When a Man…” on the MarBill CD done for their 40th anniversary, “The Many Faces of Love.”
    • Robert-Allan Arno I will add my, hopefully more than 2 cents, lol. “A Change is Gonna Come, ” and “Leave a Little Room” are my two fave Billy recorded solos, I’m wondering if he could work them into a new medley. More concretely, he has mentioned Nat King Cole as an early influence. I’d like to hear Billy record “Nature Boy,” but not as a ballad or even with a Jazz vibe, but against a Blues arrangement…Billy’s sense of pathos as well as musicality while talking about “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return” would be incomparable.
    • Martha E. Vink Happy Birthday to Billy! I’d love to hear him do some old Gospel tunes. A whole album full!
    • Brian Medoro I want to hear a whole album of Rock n Roll, Soul, Blues from Billy. Whatever he likes, it would be great.  Some of my older favorites are I’ve Got A Feeling, Don’t Stop For Nothin’, Requiem 820, I Just Want To Be Your Friend…Amazing! There’s no one like you. Have a fantastic day.!
    • Jeffrey Graham Happy Birthday blessings to one of our greatest musical treasures! I would love to hear Billy’s take on the Bill Withers/Grover Washington classic, “Just The Two Of Us!”
    • Kenneth Green Happy Birthday, Mr. Davis! Summer’s Daughter is my favorite. I’d like to see you tackle that again.
Blake Morant Sorry I’ve been out of the loop a bit, Robert-Allan Arno. Business travel wreaks havoc. I must, however, add my personal, albeit belated, tribute to the great Billy Davis, Jr. His impassioned, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” remains a classic and very relevant today. If I were privileged enough to make a request, I would ask him to record Michael Bolton’s hit, “That’s What Love Is All About.” Billy’s soulful renderings would give this song all new poignancy. It also captures the essence of his inspirational relationship with the equally great, Marilyn McCoo.
And from LaMonte McLemore’s Facebook Page:
Tomorrow, June 26 is the birthday of one of our greatest Soul singers, my musical colleague, and a forever friend, Mr. Billy Davis, Jr. Enjoy this salute at the FOREVER 5th DIMENSION blog, by Robert-Allan Arno. And all greetings you post here for Billy will be sent on over to him! A birthday “right on,” my brother, and God bless you always! –LaMonte

Here are greetings from special fans & friends, 2014:

Renee T Armstead: I can’t believe LaMonte feels the same as I do about “A Change is Gonna Come.” It brings tears to my eyes too! That is my favorite Billy song! Also, I’ve always loved the fact that Billy was named the Sunny Dimension when the group was together.  I have truly loved getting to know him and Marilyn all through these years. Happy Birthday!

Susie Paige: Have a happy birthday, Billy! “Somebody Warm Like Me” is one of my personal favorites. Thanks for all the great music!…Gabriel Pellegrino:  Billy is the Man! May God bless you with many more years!… Elston Harry: Billy, Happy Birthday, I will celebrate you!…Douglas C. Charles: Billy, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting you a few times over the years & you have always been so gracious.  “Steppin In” has become a new favorite of mine. I hope before I die to hear you sing “Leave A Little Room.” Been enjoying your solos since the first album (“Which Way to Nowhere”).  God Bless & “Be Good” as your autographs used to say…Dale Kocik: So many favorites–“Feelin Alright, Every Night, Those Were The Days, Guess Who.” Thanks so much for all of the great music, Happy Birthday Bily!…Estes John: Happy Birthday Billy. My all-time personal fave Billy-lead/solo song has always been BROKEN WING BIRD followed by IT’LL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN…Loretta Sorensen: Trying to choose just one favorite Billy Davis Jr. song is like trying to eat just one potato chip! Since I don’t stop at one chip, my favorites are Let It Be Me, Misty Roses, A Change Is Gonna Come, Requiem: 820 Latham. Happiest of Birthday’s dear Billy and thank you for always being so kind to me…Isis LaShawn Hardy:I enjoyed reading the Forever 5Th article. My top 5 favorite Billy led songs are– My Song, Too Poor to Die, It’ll Never be the Same Again, Ashes to Ashes, and Requiem: 820 Latham. But I must give props to Billy’s lead on Feelin’ Alright. It is my FAVORITE version of the song. It grooves!

Alain Baptiste: We thought about this, Robert-Allan. Billy has been a light in our lives for many years now. His in a split second recognizable sound, the dedication to everything he does, is something we have come to expect but never take for granted. With pride, we love him and Marilyn more than we can say. Adding, “Let It Be Me” is the bomb! Mariette and Alain Baptiste…

A. Scott Galloway: Happy Birthday Billy! To this day I cherish a conversation I had with Marilyn at Warner Bros. for her “The Me Nobody Knows” CD where she told me her favorite performance of yous was “Requiem: 820 Latham,” reciting some of Jimmy Webb’s vivid lyrics to me like poetry. I went home, pulled my “The Magic Garden” album out and it brought tears to my eyes. I’ve loved you and “The 5th” – my 1st favorite group – since I was 4 and my family drove from Ann Arbor to Rialto with the “Up-Up And Away” LP as our road soundtrack. Wishing you many happy returns and Much Love Always.

We Remember Casey Kasem…

The 5th Dimension Family is saddened by the passing of legendary “American Top 40” host, Casey Kasem.  Reflecting back, wasn’t it thrilling for we who got to listen first-hand each Sunday to Casey’s account, week-by-week of how “(Last Night) I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All” was ascending the chart…just to hear him say “Marilyn McCoo,” was a bonus!  And later, he gave us the scoop on “You Don’t Have to be a Star (To be in My Show),” Marilyn & Billy’s Disco era, sweet-Soul mega-hit.  (Note:  We also recently lost Don Davis, the renown producer of “Star.”)

LaMonte McLemore reminds, “Casey, just like Dick Clark and Don Cornelius, was a very good friend to The 5th Dimension, in fact, he attended our induction ceremony, when we received our star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

As well, Casey–a quintessential gentleman with a  witty sense of humor– gave me a gloriously heartfelt quote about the group for my ULTIMATE 5th DIMENSION liner notes, one I use to this day as biographer:

“The 5th Dimension stood in a class by themselves.”  –Casey Kasem

God bless his legacy.  —Robert-Allan Arno
